Purim
March 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Purim is a joyous Jewish holiday that commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from a plot to annihilate them in ancient Persia, as recorded in the biblical Book of Esther. The story revolves around Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, who courageously thwarted the wicked plans of Haman, the royal advisor to King Ahasuerus (often identified with Xerxes I). Haman had decreed the extermination of the Jews, but through Esther’s bravery and divine providence, the decree was overturned, and the Jewish people were saved. The holiday is observed on the 14th of Adar (or the 15th in walled cities like Jerusalem) and is marked by festive celebrations, reading the Megillah (Book of Esther), and acts of charity.
Purim is one of the most exuberant holidays in Judaism, emphasizing themes of reversal, survival, and hidden miracles. Traditional customs include giving gifts of food (mishloach manot), donating to the poor (matanot la’evyonim), and partaking in a festive meal (seudat Purim) with joyous singing and drinking. Many people wear costumes to highlight the theme of hidden identities, much like how Esther concealed her Jewish heritage. The holiday also includes the boisterous tradition of making noise whenever Haman’s name is mentioned during the Megillah reading, symbolizing the eradication of his memory. Purim is a time of communal unity, gratitude, and celebration, reminding Jews of the resilience of their people and the importance of faith and courage.
